New York Says ‘Gimme 5’

Long Island & Westchester Join NYC as B5 Becomes Standard for Downstate NY

On July 1, 2018, Westchester, Nassau and Suffolk counties joined the five boroughs in implementing a B5 Bioheat® fuel standard. (NYC has had its own B5 standard in effect since October 2017.) That means all heating oil in the Downstate New York region is now Bioheat containing a minimum of 5% clean, green biofuel.

How Clean Is It?

According to new research from the New England Fuel Institute and the National Oilheat Research Alliance, statewide use of B5 (including the Upstate NY region, which does not currently have a Bioheat fuel standard in effect) could reduce carbon emissions by more than 58,500 metric tons in a year. That’s like removing 125,334 cars from the road! As the Downstate region accounts for approximately 70 percent of the state’s heating oil sales, we have already achieved massive carbon reductions along with huge environmental and public health benefits.

A Team Effort

New York is proud to be one of the greenest cities on the planet, and New Yorkers both in and around the five boroughs can now proudly proclaim that their heating fuel is greener than ever. Likewise, Downstate New York’s Bioheat fuel dealers are proud to play such a critical role in the state’s environmental security. It is our honor to protect you and your home through any winter by providing you with clean, reliable, and affordable Bioheat fuel and home heating services.
